Extranjería Palma

CUE (NIE verde)

EU Citizen Registration Certificate, the “NIE verde”: for EU, EEA or Swiss citizens residing in Spain for more than three months. We handle your registration and appointment.

Book an appointment

The EU Citizen Registration Certificate —known as the “NIE verde” because of the document’s colour— certifies registration in the Central Foreigners Registry for citizens of an EU member state, the European Economic Area or Switzerland who will reside in Spain for more than three months. The document includes your NIE number. It is governed by Real Decreto 240/2007 and is mandatory within three months of your arrival. At Extranjería Palma we prepare your file according to your situation (employee, self-employed, student or with own means), get the appointment and go with you.

For years we have handled procedures for foreigners in the Balearics and across Spain —NIE, residence permits, arraigo, family reunification and nationality— and we know the offices, timeframes and criteria of the Administration inside out. Frequently asked questions

Is the NIE verde the same as the TIE? +

No. The NIE verde (registration certificate) is for EU, EEA or Swiss citizens. The TIE is the physical card for non-EU residents. EU citizens do not get a TIE.

When must I apply for the NIE verde? +

If you are an EU citizen and will reside in Spain for more than three months, you must register within those three months of your arrival.

What documentation do I need? +

A valid passport or ID document, form EX-18 and fee 790-012, plus supporting documents depending on your case: employment contract or self-employed registration, or health insurance and financial means, or enrolment and insurance if you are a student.

Does the NIE verde expire? +

The certificate does not expire as such. After five years of legal and continuous residence you can apply for the permanent residence certificate. If you lose the document, you can request a duplicate.

Is it valid as a travel document? +

It proves your residence in Spain, but does not replace your passport or ID: to travel you must use your home country’s ID document or passport.

I am an EU citizen but my family is not. Which document do they need? +

Your non-EU family members do not get the NIE verde, but the family member of an EU citizen card. We study each case and handle both.
