NIE vs TIE: key differences and when you need each one
The NIE is a number; the TIE is the physical card. We explain the difference, when you need each document and in which cases you need both.

One of the biggest sources of confusion among foreigners in Spain is the difference between NIE and TIE. Most people think they are the same thing. They are not:
- NIE = the number (administrative).
- TIE = the card (physical document).

The NIE: your administrative identity number
It is a number that identifies you before the Spanish administration. Any foreigner who lives in Spain for more than 6 months needs it, and it must be applied for within the month following your entry if you have a residence visa.
It allows you to have a tax number, open a bank account, work legally, access public services and sign contracts. It is not a physical document: you will receive a decision that accredits it, but it is not an identity document in itself.
The TIE: your official identity card
The Foreigner Identity Card is a physical document that accredits your legal status in Spain. Foreigners with temporary or long-term residence authorisation need it, and it must be applied for within the month following obtaining the authorisation.
It allows you to identify yourself before any Spanish authority and to prove your legal status. It is your official identity document in Spain (except for travelling abroad, where you use your passport).
When do I need both?
You need both if you have temporary or long-term residence authorisation. The correct sequence is:
- You enter Spain with a residence visa.
- You apply for the NIE (mandatory within the first month).
- You receive the decision with your NIE number.
- You apply for the residence authorisation.
- With the authorisation approved, you apply for the TIE.
- Now you have both: NIE (number) + TIE (card).
Special cases
- I only have a NIE (no TIE): possible for short stays. The NIE allows you to work if your visa authorises it.
- I am going to change my authorisation: if you move from temporary to long-term residence, you will need a new TIE in line with the new authorisation.
- I have lost my TIE: report the loss to the National Police and apply for a duplicate. The NIE is not lost: it remains yours.
Renewal
- NIE: it is usually renewed automatically when you renew your residence authorisation.
- TIE: it can be renewed from 3 months before its expiry. Don’t wait until the last minute.
