Registering on the padrón in Palma de Mallorca: requirements and appointment
How to register on the Palma municipal register (padrón): documents needed, OAC appointments, and what to do without a rental contract in your name.
Extranjería Palma ·

The padrón proves where you actually live, not who holds the lease. If you have just arrived in Palma or moved neighbourhoods, here is what you need to register on the municipal roll, with or without a rental contract in your own name.
Why the padrón matters for immigration procedures too
The padrón certificate comes up constantly in immigration procedures: it proves the length of effective residence required for arraigo, it is often requested when applying for the EU registration certificate or other residence authorisations, and health centres, schools and the town hall itself ask for it for other services. Getting it sorted in your first month saves delays later on.
Documentation by situation
| Your situation | What to bring |
|---|---|
| Property you own | Title deed, or the IBI (property tax) receipt |
| Rental with a contract in your name | Valid rental agreement |
| You live with someone and are not on the contract | Written authorisation from an adult already registered at that address, who can themselves prove ownership or the rental agreement |
| None of the above | The town hall may accept other documents (utility bills in your name) and check actual occupancy |
In every case you also need a valid ID document: passport, national ID card, or your NIE if you already have it.
Not having the contract in your name is not a dead end
This is the most common doubt among people sharing a flat or living with family. The rule that governs the padrón across all of Spain allows you to register even without a contract in your name: it is enough for the adult already registered at that address to sign an authorisation, provided they themselves can prove ownership or the tenancy. The town hall can also verify actual occupancy through other means, such as utility bills.
What does not work is turning up with nothing connecting your name to that address: you need, at minimum, authorisation from whoever holds title to the property.
How to book an appointment in Palma
Registering on the padrón after moving from another municipality or from abroad requires a prior appointment (cita previa), except for people over 65, who can go directly to the Son Moix OAC. Appointments are booked at citaprevia.palma.cat or by calling 010 (or 971 22 59 00 from outside Palma), and the procedure is handled at the Oficinas de Atención a la Ciudadanía (OAC), spread across several districts of the city. There is also an online route with digital signature for those who already have one.
Registering on the padrón has no cost. If what you actually need is an appointment for an immigration procedure (NIE, TIE, CUE), that is a different system — we cover it in our guide to booking an extranjería appointment in Palma.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register on the padrón without a NIE? Yes. The padrón does not require you to already have a NIE — a valid ID document, such as your passport, is enough. Many people register on the padrón before even applying for their NIE, since the residence certificate can support other procedures.
How long does registration take? The town hall does not publish a fixed processing time. In our experience in Palma, with a complete file, registration is usually finalised within a few days of the appointment.
Does the property owner need to attend the appointment? Not necessarily in person, but if they are not already registered at that address and you have no contract in your name, you need their signed authorisation plus a copy of their ID.
What if I move within Palma? That is a different procedure — a change of address — with the same documentary logic: you need to prove the new address the same way (ownership, contract or authorisation).
